Più escursione focale, ma sempre F1.8: ecco il nuovo Sigma 17-40mm F1.8 DC Art
Roberto Colombo, 17th June 2025
“Sigma is renewing its bright zoom line for APS-C with the new 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art, a direct evolution of the famous 18-35mm. Lighter, more versatile, and also optimized for video, it combines a constant F1.8 aperture, prime-lens quality, and a compact design intended for daily and professional use. Arriving from July 2025.”
Over a decade after the release of the revolutionary 18-35mm F1.8, Sigma presents its natural successor: the 17-40mm F1.8 DC | Art. This new standard zoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras expands the focal range and aims to offer the same image quality as a prime lens, with even more flexible performance, reduced weight, and solutions designed for video.
The new lens introduces a wider focal range (equivalent to 25.5-60mm on full frame), while maintaining the constant maximum aperture of F1.8 throughout the zoom. This is a significant technical achievement, allowing for pronounced bokeh and high performance in low-light conditions, even while moving. All of this is housed in a body that weighs over 30% less than its predecessor (stopping the scale at 535 grams), while still maintaining a complex optical design: 17 elements in 11 groups, including four SLD and four aspherical lenses. The diaphragm is rounded and consists of 11 blades.
Also Designed for Videomakers
The Sigma 17-40mm was designed with a strong focus on video needs. Autofocus is handled by the HLA linear motor, which is silent and precise, while focus breathing has been minimized. The minimum focusing distance is 28 centimeters, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8 at 40mm. The design features internal zoom, dual customizable AFL buttons, a de-clickable aperture ring (except for the Canon RF version), and dust and splash resistance. The lens will be available from July 10, 2025, in L-Mount, Sony E, and Fujifilm X versions; for Canon RF, the launch is scheduled for August. The international price is set at $919.
Sigma aims to replicate the commercial and cultural success of the iconic 18-35mm with a more modern and versatile product, which will likely capture the attention of more than a few enthusiasts.
