"Sigma today presents two lenses dedicated to full-frame mirrorless cameras, specifically L-Mount (Sigma, Panasonic, Leica) and E-Mount (Sony): Sigma 15mm F1.4 DG DN Diagonal Fisheye ART and Sigma 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS S | Sports"
The month of February is always full of new products in the photography world. Yesterday, we saw Fujifilm's announcement regarding the new compact camera with an APS-C sensor, the Fujifilm X100VI, while today, Sigma is placing new items on the table with the launch of two new lenses that stand at opposite extremes in terms of field of view.
We are talking about two lenses dedicated to full-frame mirrorless cameras, particularly L-Mount (Sigma, Panasonic, Leica) and E-Mount (Sony).
Sigma 15mm F1.4 DG DN Diagonal Fisheye
On one side, we find an extreme wide-angle, the new Sigma 15mm F1.4 DG DN Diagonal Fisheye Art, which, as the name makes clear, covers a 180° field of view on the diagonal, for immersive and high-impact images. Japanese engineers have worked to make the lens suitable for today's high-resolution cameras and to provide astrophotographers with a truly usable fisheye.
To do this, for example, great importance was given to the correction of sagittal coma, and Sigma guarantees high sharpness retention at the edges.
Naturally, landscape and architecture photography also remain two privileged fields of use for this lens. The lens is constructed according to a scheme of 21 elements in 15 groups, including 4 FLD low-dispersion glass elements, 3 SLD, and two aspherical elements. It uses an HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) linear AF motor. The lens features a rear filter holder and also has an Arca-Swiss compatible tripod mount. In addition to a dust and splash-resistant structure, the front element of the lens is equipped with a water- and oil-repellent coating.
Being a fisheye lens, barrel distortion is not corrected to maintain the unique visual effect. Sigma now has four F1.4 wide-angle lenses in the Art fixed focal length line with functions specifically designed for astrophotography, including 14mm, 20mm, and 24mm.
Sigma 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS S | Sports
The new telephoto lens, Sigma 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS S | Sports, is dedicated to completely different genres, making its compactness one of its strengths. In fact, it has a length of 23.5 cm and a weight of 1,370 grams.
The optical design uses a scheme of 20 elements in 14 groups, including 3 FLD and 2 SLD lenses. It offers internal HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) focusing and an OS stabilizer. On the lens barrel, we find the aperture ring with the possibility of clickless use for video recording, with a lock feature to prevent accidental rotation. The body also features 3 AFL buttons and a focus limiter, in addition to a customizable switch and one for the stabilization mode.
The L-mount version is also compatible with SIGMA teleconverters to achieve AF shooting at ultra-telephoto focal lengths up to 1,000mm.
Among the technical specifications, resistance to weather, dust, and water splashes is essential, given its sports and nature photography focus.
